I too have made shopping bags for myself, my mom and my sister-in-law without a pattern as such. Starting with a rectangular piece on the bottom and picking up stitches around the edges to knit in the round on up the sides in whatever pattern. Then garter stitch a band at the top, knit on the handles and you're done. They are a very easy and appreciated gift. Great post, by the way. What a coincidence!
