Indeed, bugs don't like dark colours, especially blue. People used to paint their kitchens blue because of this phenomenon. Maybe you already do this, but I would start taking anti-histamine a few days before the picking starts. if you're still itching anyway, there are lots of different anti-hiatamines available today, so you might ask your doctor for a different type.
Thank you for a wonderful blog and happy picking and knitting.

Yum, I can't wait until you open your little store, that would be a nice country drive from my town (Riga). I also am not a fan of those biting beetles. I think I need to start growing some raspberry canes.

Your "barn load" of berries reminds me of my grandparents home in western Washington state. The lived in a very little town at the end of the highway. Their garage was more like a small barn, in that it was two story and large enough to house 2 cars and a small workbench on the first floor. But the best part was the gable end was covered was raspberry vines. The original canes had been brought with them when they had moved from Sioux Falls (and those had had their start on the family farm in Northfield MN). During the season we kids had berries at every meal and as a snack every time we walked past. Of course we had an agreement with the Stellar Jays, they were to eat only the top half and we had the bottom. (yeah, right, like they and all to other critters kept the bargain).
And the circle of life keeps moving on and we pass on the memories to those who follow.

There are some things that MIGHT help with the misquitos bites...that being taking b-complex as well as b6 vitamins. Does not work for everyone as my hubby and daughter still get bitten, but they mostly leave me alone. Also, when we go walking when they are out and about, I often tuck some dyer sheets into my clothing, or even pin it on in places with safety pins. They do not seem so keen on that. I have read they like dark clothing too...though what else can a person wear while picking berries?? Being they stain so badly.

I enjoy reading your posts very much. I do want to say it is wonderful that you have been able to be a friend and to help console your friends who just lost the loved one. It is often difficult in this world to find real friends!! BLess you for being one!!

I love homemade preserves! I wonder if there might be a natural predator you could introduce to the grapevines to control the beetle population. Might be worth asking at the local garden center.

It is so refreshing to read the posts from someone so utterly charmed by her circumstrance.
