KAL Stage 2

7 April 2011 — if you are ready for Stage 3 instructions, click here.

Hello people, how is your slow knitting going on the Summer in the Country Blanket?  I am taking my sweet time — not really because I want to, but because there are so many things going on right now that I don’t have a choice.

Right now, I am imagining that it is a slow, lazy day and that I am setting up over at our cottage for a few of you to drop in to knit.  I’ve got some fresh peanut butter maple cookies coming out of the oven and a loaf of cranberry orange bread waiting to be cut.  Coffee going and the tea kettle is on. Fresh cut flowers from the field across the road are in a pretty little vase on my desk by the window and I am ready to receive my guests.

And  now I hear you all outside through open windows as you to arrive.  Your friendly voices float in on the breeze and I smile, happy the fun is about to begin.  I open the door, and in you all come laughing, hugging, chatting … it is so good to spend an afternoon in the country, in a cottage on the river, with such a lovely group of friends.

Can you picture this scene, imagine the lighting, the smell of baked goods and coffee mingling with fresh cut flowers.  Do you feel the weight of your knitting bag in your hands, the project inside ready to be brought out and continued in this sweet circle of friends?

Good.  Now that we are all together, I am ready to present you with the beginning rows of the body of the blanket.  By now you should have your 2.5 inches of seed stitch bottom border completed. And remember, this is a blind knit along, so that is why I have not posted a photo at this point … I don’t want to spoil the surprises coming your way.

Before I give you the directions for the rows, I’d like to give a few definitions:

Definitions

SD ST 11: Stands for “Seed Stitch Across 11 Stitches”. Work as follows: *K1, P1, K1*, repeat across 11 stitches.

C9F Stands for “Cable 9 in Front”. Work as follows: Slip next 5 stitches onto cable needle, hold at front of work, knit next 4 stitches, then knit stitches from cable needle. If you need further help with cables, please try visiting knittinghelp.com. They have great video tutorials and diagrams there.

PSSO: Stands for “Pass Slipped Stitch Over”. This is a technique used to make a decrease. Usually you will see it presented this way, “Sl1 (means “slip one stitch without knitting it), K1, PSSO” — and what you do is you use your needle tip to get a hold of that slipped stitch and pass it over the K1 you just made, and the off the needle. So, where there were two stitches, now there is only one and you have made a decrease.

MB: Stands for “Make Bobble”

  1. [K1, YF, K1, YF, K1] into next stitch, turn
  2. K5, turn
  3. P5, turn
  4. SL1, K1, PSSO, K1, K2TOG, turn
  5. P3TOG

Okay, now here are directions for the first part of the body of the blanket.

First off, place stitch markers as follows:

  • Count 11 stitches, place marker
  • 18 stitches, place marker
  • (33 stitches, place marker, 17 stitches, place marker )3 times
  • 33 stitches, place maker
  • 18 stitches, place marker

Next, work the following 12 rows two times (24 rows total):

Okay, let me know via a comment on this page if you have any questions or issues. If anyone in the KAL notices a question by someone else that you feel you can answer … please have a go at it. We are all in this together!

More directions will follow after several people have completed the instructions above.

Good luck!

  1. Awesome! Can’t wait to begin knitting this next part tomorrow!

    • Wonderful Sue, I am about 3/4 done with this second part so far. Nice … and … slow …! 🙂 firefly

  2. This is so much fun!

  3. Oh, I’m so excited. I think my yarn will be on my front porch when I get home today, so I’m not too far behind. BTW – I made your cute hat pictured for my daughter and granddaughter in pink and brown (rather than blue and brown) for Christmas and THEY LOVE THEIR hats! Thanks for your graceful sharing spirit : )

    • Hi Cathy, how fun to have yarn on the porch to come home to! I love that aspect of online shopping that you get to look forward to packages arriving in the mail, having something to open, etc. That hat you are speaking of is still my favorite to grab as I am heading out back. It is just so easy to smash onto your head and go, and it keeps my head so warm! Thank you for your nice comments, and for sharing as well! ~firefly

  4. I missed the feed but hunted you down. I’ve been in the middle of sorting my yarn/fabric and taking a room for knitting/needlwork upstairs (another bedroom bites the dust in this empty nesters home). One more inch to go and I’ll start the next step for the pattern. This is really fun, and a great motivator. Wish I knew how to post a pic on this site; I have been pretty lazy about this, I’ll have to admit.
Just cheers me coming here! Judy

    • Hi Judy … as for posting photos, I don’t think you can add a photo to the comments here. But, you could post at Flickr or your blog if you have one, or at Facebook and then link to it here in the comments. ~ firefly

  5. Just posted a correction to Row 1 — you will see it in red italics. Sorry for the mistake everyone, and thank you to Karen for finding it.

    ~firefly

  6. Can you show a photo of the part with the cable needle? I’m following the video, but it would help me to know I’m on track if I could see what that part of the pattern looks like with the extra needle. I haven’t worked with cables before. Thanks!

    • Could anyone in the group post a photo for Beckie, as she described, of the cable needle in the front of the piece as you are working the cable stitches?

      ~firefly

  7. stage 2 done. but mostly so i could finish up some other busy stuff. for stage 3 i hope it’s warm enough to sit in the park and have a little picnic.

  8. I’m just beginning this second set of instructions. It is fun seeing the pattern taking shape. I’ll post a photo soon, when my daughter is around to help : )

    stage 2 done 🙂

    • Wow, so pretty!! I don’t know if I can do this, but I’m going to give it my best shot! Thanks for the pics Joan and Karen!

  10. I just finished the second set of instructions. This is such a beautiful pattern, Firefly! Thank you for hosting this fun KAL. I posted photos on my blog and on Ravelry today. I will try to link to it here:

    • Beautiful progress Mary … and thank you for your kind words about the pattern. I should be able to issue the next step by Friday (1 Apr) of this week. ~firefly

  11. Thank you for the correction of the first row–I was going “bonkers” trying to see if I understood the instructions by adding the stitches and I was always 3 stitches short. Now I can happily continue on my lovely yellow “blankie”. Phew! I’m totally enjoying this fun challenge.

  12. BOY!! After seeing the pictures and reading all the comments I’m really tempted to join you all. I hope Firefly’s fantasy knit event can become a reality sometime – knitter’s are great people to get together with and Firefly’s treats sound divine!

    • Mary sometime we will definitely do some cottage knitting — we have to open it back up for the season and get it ready for company. But, I’ll let you know! ~firefly

  13. Yipee! I’ve finished clue 2! It’s coming out so pretty and the pace is perfect! Come take a peek! http://www.Berkshirecottage.blogspot.com

    • Your blanket is looking beautiful Sue, thanks for posting a photo! ~firefly

  14. I just finished the first part. This is my first knit along and my biggest project never. I’m enjoying this very much

  15. Dorry it was to have read biggest project ever.

  16. Patiently awaiting #3 instructions 🙂

    • I know, sorry I didn’t get to it Friday as planned. That darn cold/flu thing I had took a lot more out of me than I thought it would. I’ll get those instructions posted tomorrow (Monday) for sure. ~ firefly

      • Well, take care of yourself. We can wait. Only adds to the mystery 🙂

      • I really hope you are recovering. This flu bug is lasting a couple weeks here. IT’s all good, though, as I have gotten the materials to make 2 more! haha!

  17. Just finished the fist stage of the blanket. Am starting the second stage. I am a little afraid of the next staep, as I haven’t done a bobble before. Wish me luck.

  18. If you are still accepting latecomers to the KAL, I would like to join. However, when I go to the link to sign up, I can’t see a place to do so.

I have my yarn. . .”I Love This Cotton” from Hobby Lobby. I challenge anyone to find a softer cotton. It is worsted weight and comes in a lot of beautiful colors.

I was hoping to buy cones from you, firefly, but sadly they won’t be available until later. We’ll have to do another knit-along then. This blanket is for me! I am making it in white since I bought several skeins in one dyelot on sale recently. I live in northern climes and will love this blanket in the summer, but a second cotton blanket would be a welcome gift for my family members in Alabama. So let me know when your cotton yarn is available again.

I have my border finished and as soon as I sign off here, I will start the second stage. Before I knit, I get my cuppa and read your blog to get into the right frame of mind. Also, although I am a fast knitter and usually work at a furious pace, I am taking this one slow, relaxing and savoring every moment. Since I retired, I am alone a lot, so it is comforting to know others are doing the same.

I look forward to the stage 3 directions, as I will most likely finish stage 2 tonight. Not that I don’t have other things I could work on!

Thanks for hostessing the KAL. Please sign me up somehow.

    • Hello Carolinn,

There isn’t really a place to sign up, people are just posting comments to let us all know that they are “here” and a part of the group. So, by doing that you have joined the KAL. It is great to have you hear, and I will definitely let everyone in the KAL know first when I have yarn available again. Smiles! ~firefly

  19. Ok I have finished the second set of instructions and am loving my lovely yellow blankie so far. I will post pics on my blog when I get off in the morning.

  20. Well, I’ve been toying with joining y’all on this project and as Sugar and Cream was on sale at Michael’s today for $1.00 a skein, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. I don’t usually like knitting with cotton as the difference in my tension on knit and purl rows shows up so clearly, but this sounds like a fun knit along. My yarn is the color of green apples…

    • Hi Morgen, and welcome to the KAL. A green apples colored Summer in the Country cotton blanket sounds beautiful and refreshing! I hope you have a great time, I know we will enjoy having you here. ~firefly

  21. I have finished the first part, and am on to the second. I hope to be caught up to y’all tomorrow or tuesday. Depends. The stomach flu has hit the Ort-Homestead. I just checked out Mary’s pictures on Ravelry, and am relaly excited. I may omit the popcorn balls on mine. Haven’t decided yet.

  22. Have I missed stage 3? Did you get a chance to put it up yet?

  23. My comments don’t seem to be showing up here! *sad face*. I have finished the first 2 stages of the KAL – I have been blogging about it (and other projects) over at Marcaritaville. http://marcymade.weebly.com/1/post/2011/04/better-late.html

When are we starting stage 3? I was hoping to have the instructions for to work on today at my knitting group. But… I guess this is a good thing, because I am working on 3 other knitting projects right now as well. 🙂 I am really enjoying workin gon this project!

Knit on, friends, knit on!… Marcy

  24. Okay everyone, I just posted Stage 3 instructions for the KAL. The link is up at the top of this page (Stage 2 page).

    Enjoy!
